Outreach
The goal of the Outreach Sub-Committee is to engage layers of community members by targeting outreach efforts and activities through a combination of mailings, outreach materials, workshops, hikes, etc.
The Outreach Sub-Committee publishes the bi-monthly electronic newsletter – The Westfield RiverNotes – and maintains the Committee’s website. The Sub-Committee also produces informative and interpretative materials for the East Branch Trail. Other examples of outreach include:
Wild & Scenic Brochure:

The Westfield River Wild & Scenic brochure was updated in 2005. The brochure included photos, map and description of the Wild & Scenic Westfield River and the Committee. As part of the Westfield River Wild & Scenic Stewardship Plan process, copies of the brochure, as well as the Highland Communities Initiative’s Land Conservation Options brochure, were mailed to over 1000 landowners and town officials along the Wild & Scenic stretches. To request a copy of the brochure contact (413) 268-3129, ext 2 or coordinator@westfieldriverwildscenic.org.
Information Kiosks:

In 1993, Pioneer Valley Planning Commission prepared “The Westfield River Greenway Plan.” A mock-up of the executive summary of the plan was produced and placed at 5 kiosks at major access sites and along pullovers on roadways adjacent to the designated Wild & Scenic segments. The kiosk included a map that indicated Wild & Scenic segments, a description of the Wild & Scenic designation, and an overview of the actions recommended by the Greenway Plan.
In 2005, the Westfield River Watershed Association, through a grant from the Riverways Adopt-A-Stream Program, created an informational kiosk at a MassHighway pull-off on Rte 20 in Huntington. The informational kiosk included an overview of the Westfield River watershed, Jacob’s Ladder Scenic Byway and the National Wild & Scenic designation; as well as, a map and list of points of interests (including scenic, cultural, historical, and recreational).
Over the next couple of years, WRW&SAC plans to update and repair the existing five (5) kiosks, build eight (8) new kiosks and install an information board at one (1) kiosk along the Wild & Scenic segments of the Westfield River. The new kiosks will educate the public about Wild & Scenic designation, increase awareness about the Westfield River, promote the enhancement of the Westfield’s resources, and encourage participation in the protection of the Westfield River.
