Stewardship Plan

Bridge reconstruction

Since 1993, the Westfield River Greenway Plan set forth the basic management plan for protecting the Westfield River. A new guiding Westfield River Wild & Scenic Stewardship Plan is being developed to help inventory and manage the outstanding resources for which the river was given the designation. The goals of the Stewardship Plan are to:

  • Inventory and assess the Wild & Scenic resources along the Westfield River;
  • Develop a roadmap of short-term and long-term strategies and actions to protect the River and its resources;
  • Assist communities in long-term protection of the Westfield River; and
  • Encourage stewardship of the Wild & Scenic resources
Aquatic bugs Unlike other management plans which tend to be printed and sit on the shelves or archived on websites, the focus for the Westfield River Wild & Scenic Stewardship Plan is to promote active river stewardship. Local river stewardship is evident by the participation of over 65 volunteer Stream Team members who surveyed over 70 miles of the Westfield River. Using protocols developed by the Massachusetts Riverways Adopt-A-Stream Program, volunteers documented and assessed the Westfield River’s outstandingly remarkable scenic, geological, historical, recreational and ecological resources. Survey findings have been compiled into Shoreline Survey Reports and Executive Summaries. The problems, assets and priorities for action identified by the volunteers have become the basis for the Westfield River Wild & Scenic Stewardship Plan.

Stream Teams continue to monitor the resources along the Westfield River and are active participants in making the Westfield River Wild & Scenic Stewardship Plan a dynamic document. Check out our volunteer section if you are interested in joining a Stream Team.
